Hello! My name is Jill Pelto
I am an Artist and a Science Communicator.
My work focuses on communicating human-environment connections. I incorporate scientific data directly into my paintings to engage broad audiences using climate and conservation graphs. I’m passionate about outreach and collaboration, and I work with students and adults around the country in creating their own data-art. I’m also the Art Director of the North Cascade Glacier Climate Project, which I co-lead with my dad, Science Director Dr. Mauri Pelto.
I am 33 and currently based in Bellingham, Washington. I grew up in Massachusetts, lived in Maine for a decade, and New Mexico briefly.
I completed a Masters of Science in August 2018, which focused on studying the sensitivity of the Antarctic Ice Sheet to changes in our Earth-Climate system. I underwent this degree at the University of Maine, where I also completed B.A. degrees in Studio Art and Earth Science. I have conducted research on the mountain glaciers of Washington and British Columbia, in the Dry Valleys and Transantarctic Mountains of Antarctica, in the Falkland Islands, and in New Zealand.
